Fortsetzung eines Erzählanfangs: A Trip into the Outback

From Green Line 5, Unit 1 (Australia), p. 20:

It was the first weekend of the summer and the Christmas holidays, and the four teenagers were excited. Four good friends on their first road trip into the outback! No parents for a week! Just two guys and two girls – was this going to work? But it was summer, school was over, so nobody really cared. They should have …

1. From Angelo’s diary:

20 December,11:00 a.m.
Today is the first day of our Christmas holiday and it's oppressively hot. Actually, no really good weather for a road trip. But it's already planned and paid for, so we have to do it. The others look forward to it, but I'm not that sure. I mean we're only sixteen. And one week can be a long time.
But maybe it'll be fun. Ruby, my girlfriend, is there, too, and Donovan with his girlfriend Dani. Ruby is very intelligent, but quiet and a little shy. Donovan is a star rugby player, and sometimes a bit pretentious. Dani is nice but princess-like. She could be real a problem, if there was a spider in the car or something like that. And I'm Angelo. I've always been quite the worry-wart.

21 December, 2:00 p.m.
In one hour we'll leave. We all have big backpacks full of clothes, food and survival things like chocolate bars and are a little excited. Our parents are so concerned that we haven't forgotten anything that we'll need and that we'll eat enough healthy stuff. (We won't.) They all say that they will miss us so much, and Dani's mother nearly started crying, when we got into the car.

7:00 p.m.
We had to travel more than three hours, before we arrived in the wilderness. There we pitched our tent and unpacked our stuff. Now we're sitting in front of the tent, and Donovan is trying to make a campfire and fails. Ruby is helping him. I hope she'll manage it, because I'm hungry.

8:00 p.m.
Ruby lit the fire, and we ate sausages and potatoes. At the moment we're sitting around the campfire and Dani is telling a ghost story. I think, I'll go to bed soon. I'm tired.

22 December, 10:00 a.m.
Something horrible happened. Dani is gone. We searched for her for hours, but we couldn't find a trace of her. Donovan is crushed. We have not the foggiest idea, where she could be, but Ruby says, she woke up in the middle of the night and saw Dani leaving the tent. She thought, she was on the way to the loo, so she went back to sleep. We're all worried sick.

3:00 p.m.
Still no trace. We searched the whole area. Nothing.

8:00 p.m.
Dusk is falling. Probably she's hurt. Or dead. Nobody said it loud, but we all think so.

23 December, 1:00 p.m.
Dani is still gone. Donovan thinks, she's been kidnapped. He wants to travel home and inform the police. But we can't. The car has broken down. Does not move one millimeter. There is no mobile phone signal. Don't know what to do. But if she's been kidnapped, she's probably alive. You won't get ransom money for a dead person.

6:00 p.m.
Ruby’s been acting very strangely lately. Maybe she likes Dani more than I thought. In four days they'll be searching for us.

24 December, 9:00 a.m.
Tomorrow is Christmas. Nobody is in the mood for celebrating. I'm worried about Ruby. She's been very quiet lately, even more than usual.

4:00 p.m.
Ruby disappeared for two hours in the forest. She doesn't want to tell us, what she did.

6:00 p.m.
Donovan says, he wants to search for Dani again, before it's getting dark. I don't think there's much hope.

8:00 p.m
Donovan didn’t come back. We searched in vain for him everywhere. It feels like a nightmare, but you can't wake up.

25 December, 8:00 a.m.
Christmas morning. What a strange feeling, to know that every person in the whole country is happy now, unpacking Christmas presents, singing Christmas songs. Except for us. We were four, and now it’s only the two of us, Ruby and me.

10:00 a.m.
I don't believe anymore that we can find them. Dani is gone now for more than three days, and we've heard nothing from her. Something terrible must have happened to Donovan as well. Two days left, until they'll search for us.

7:00 p.m.
I'm concerned about Ruby. Sometimes she's just sitting there staring into space. Is that normal?

26 December, 3:00 p.m.
My suspicion has been right. There's definitely something wrong with Ruby. She has such a strange empty stare. I'm scared of her. One day left.

8:00 p.m.
I'm really frightened now. Her stare is not just empty anymore. It's hungry. Why doesn’t the goddamn car work? Ruby's dad is a mechanic. Could it be that she wrecked the car on purpose? And if that's so, what else did she do? I fear for my life. But I can't hurt her. She's mad! And she's my girlfriend.

2. From the Sydney Morning Herald - December 29, 2013:

Mysterious Disappearance
Three Teenagers Reported Missing – One Found Dead

"Two day ago a couple reported four teenagers missing. On December 2l, the sixteen-year-old students had set out for a one-week road trip into the outback. The local police immediately launched a search of the area and found the teenagers’ car yesterday. The engine had been damaged by someone with considerable skill. They also found a corpse near the campsite. The dead young man could be identified as Angelo S.

The police are still searching for the other three teenagers, but it must be assumed that they are not alive anymore. Of course, the parents won't give up hope, until their children are found.

And yet the manipulation of the engine leaves only one conclusion: The students must have been murdered. Strangely enough, the corpse of Angelo S. shows no injuries or other signs of violence. It definitely is one of the most mysterious cases the Sydney police ever had."
